BTS did not ease back in. The group released Arirang on March 20, 2026, sold more albums in a week than any group in more than a decade, and opened a stadium tour three weeks later. The numbers explain the plan. The plan explains why the album looks the way it does.

The first-week count

Billboard reported that Arirang debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated April 4 with 641,000 equivalent album units. That is the largest week for an album by a group since the chart began measuring by units in December 2014. It is the seventh BTS album to reach No. 1, after Proof (2022), BE (2020), Map of the Soul: 7 (2020), Map of the Soul: Persona (2019), Love Yourself: Answer (2018) and Love Yourself: Tear (2018).

Most of the total is purchases. Pure album sales came to 532,000, the group's biggest sales week ever and the biggest for a group since One Direction's Midnight Memories sold 547,000 on the chart dated Dec. 14, 2013. Streaming supplied 95,000 units, equal to 99.10 million on-demand official streams, which is BTS's biggest streaming week for an album.

The physical figure is 516,000, and it comes with a method. Arirang was sold in 17 vinyl variants and nine CD editions, all with the same tracklist, and all with collectible items such as photocards, stickers and posters. Vinyl alone accounted for 208,000 copies, the best vinyl week by a group in the modern era, which Billboard dates to 1991 when electronic tracking began. It is also the sixth-largest vinyl week for any album, behind five by Taylor Swift.

Put those facts next to the context Billboard supplies. Swift's The Life of a Showgirl opened with 4.002 million units and 3.48 million copies sold. Arirang's week is the biggest since that one by units. The distance between the two is large, and it is worth keeping in view. BTS set a group record. It did not rival the biggest solo release of the decade.

A rollout built for a global audience

The release date was announced on Jan. 1. The title came on Jan. 16. The album arrived with a live Netflix special, BTS The Comeback Live: Arirang, on March 21, and the lead single "Swim" came out with its music video the same day. The group then appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 25 and 26.

That is a sequence aimed at several time zones at once. A streaming premiere reaches Seoul, Mexico City and New York in the same hour. A late-night slot reaches American viewers who do not follow K-pop closely. Seventeen vinyl variants reach the collector who buys the record for the shelf, not the speaker.

The tour that followed

The BTS World Tour Arirang opened on April 9 in Goyang, South Korea, and arrived in the United States on April 25 in Tampa, Fla. Billboard listed U.S. and Mexico dates through May 28, a return to the U.S. on Aug. 1 and a U.S. and Canada finish on Sept. 6 in Inglewood, Calif. A freely licensed fan photograph dated July 17, 2026 shows the group on stage in Paris, so the tour reached France as well. The dates above are the ones Billboard published in March.

Pollstar's mid-year ranking, which closes on May 13, shows the early result. Arirang is No. 3 worldwide with $139.7 million from 13 concerts and 661,216 tickets, and it is the only headliner in the top ten averaging more than $10 million a show. In North America it is first, at $104.2 million, ahead of Lady Gaga and Bad Bunny.

The tour figures and the album figures point to the same fan. This is an audience that buys the object, buys the ticket and streams the song, in that order and in volume. A group with that audience does not need radio to open a stadium. It does need a calendar that lets the audience reach the shows, which is why the long North American dates matter.

What to listen for

The charts say little about the music itself. What is on record is the lead single, "Swim," and the choice to release it and its video on the same day as the album. A single that arrives with the full record, not a month ahead of it, asks listeners to judge the album as a whole.

For the group, the reunion arithmetic is simple. The seventh No. 1 came in a week when the rest of the top five included Luke Combs at No. 2 with 101,000 units, Morgan Wallen, Harry Styles and Don Toliver. BTS had more than six times the units of the No. 2 album. That is a margin few acts get.
