Paris Spring 2027: Lightness, Gold and a Library
Paris Fashion Week closed on Oct. 6 with lightness, gold and a Valentino show staged in a library. A report on the spring 2027 shows that mattered.

Paris Fashion Week closed on Oct. 6 with Louis Vuitton, and with it ended a month of spring 2027 shows that began in New York. The Paris stretch, as Wallpaper summed it up, had two through-lines. One was lightness, a pursuit shared by designers at Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Dior. The other was clothing built for the many lives inside a single woman.
This account draws on Wallpaper's wrap of the week. It covers the shows that report describes and does not claim to have seen them.
Lightness, from three houses
At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière staged the closing show in the Cour Carrée of the Louvre. The set evoked a motorway, with tarmac roads and concrete crash barriers, and 34 futuristic Louis Vuitton cars hovering above it. Against that surreal scene he showed a collection titled Ergonomie, defined by ease. Silhouettes were scarf-like and caught the air. Tailoring was reimagined in ultralight fabrications. "Nothing is rigid, everything is fluid, like a second skin," he said, in the words Wallpaper quotes. After a 13-year tenure largely defined by the structured and the sculptural, it read as a departure.
Hermès turned its Garde Républicaine space into a gleaming white box. Nadège Vanhée's collection described garments floating by like feathers in the air. Ventilation ran through it in gauzy fabrics, netting and perforated leather and suede, and the bucket bags came with air holes. Streamers were cut into hemlines. Wallpaper notes that Paris was in the last blush of late-summer warmth, with the showspace sweltering.
At Dior, Jonathan Anderson sent an invitation with two wénwán walnuts, an old Chinese practice of rubbing walnuts together until they take on a jade-like gloss, which can take five years. It was a metaphor for patience. The collection offered plissé jacquards, bouncing ruffles, fluttering organza petals, a swan-shaped metal evening bag and a shrunken bar jacket with a contrasting collar. Anderson also turned heavy wool tailoring into trompe l'oeil organza.
The women within a woman
At Chanel, Matthieu Blazy marked a year since his debut by looking to Gabrielle Chanel's own changing style. The show began with her 2.55 quilted handbag, retrieved from the house archives and carried by Dyanira Hurbuscher, who opened and closed the show. Jersey underwear, the start of Chanel's fashion career, peeked out from the opening looks. Edwardian corsets were deconstructed and paired with tutu-like skirts. Tweed was reimagined in stretch fabric, and pearls were rendered in fabric. The runway at the Grand Palais was lined with a flock of giant birds in flight. "It's about the women within a woman," Blazy said.
At Givenchy, Sarah Burton offered a wardrobe of denim, satin shirts, leather skirts and razor-sharp tailoring, with sculptural metal wings on one Grecian gown. "I wanted a sense of balance and clarity," she said in a note to guests. At Celine, Michael Rider described the collection as one of positive obsession, with satin in vivid pink and green, and sized-up slip dresses.
Gold, books and walnuts
Saint Laurent's show was widely rumored to be Anthony Vaccarello's last, though the house had not announced it. Wallpaper says he handed a set of house keys to his son Luca at the end. The runway was lined with large chandeliers under the Eiffel Tower, and the whole collection except a few closing black gowns was gold. The Yves Saint Laurent trench, the safari jacket and brocade tailoring appeared in golden tints.
Valentino's Alessandro Michele used the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, never before used for a fashion show, and called the collection Antilibrary, after Umberto Eco's idea that the most valuable books are the ones you have not read. Guests were asked to bring a book to donate to local libraries. Michele used a Troye Sivan song as the soundtrack, and some caps read "Villan Teen."
At Akris, Albert Kriemler took his palette from the Viennese painter Martha Jungwirth, and her brushstrokes became ribbons, appliqués and laser-cut fringe. At Dries Van Noten, Julian Klausner made graphic prints from movie posters imagined in the atelier. At Issey Miyake, Satoshi Kondo took the Japanese idea of ma, negative space, and staged the show in near-total darkness with a pianist.
Craft, labor and one new director
Rick Owens described jackets built from individually cut circles of recycled nylon tulle that took around 45 hours each. Acne Studios marked its 30th anniversary by mixing historical costume with denim. Chloé's Chemena Kamali sent out raincoats in white, blush pink, firetruck red and yellow. At Courrèges, the new creative director Drew Henry, who earlier worked in the design teams of Phoebe Philo and Burberry, showed lime, vermilion and bright white and borrowed the go-go boot and the Mod A-line.
Loewe's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez built an in-the-round arena at the Château de Vincennes. At Maison Margiela, Glenn Martens staged his show among drooping, faded flowers. Junya Watanabe's show, titled Funky, was walked by Ciara. Miuccia Prada described her Miu Miu collection as an attempt to bring elegance to sports.
What it means for New York readers
The Paris week favored lightness and multiplicity over a single silhouette. Hermès linked its ventilated construction to rising heat, and Andreas Kronthaler, designing for Vivienne Westwood, wrote about a stifling summer and what clothes will become as conditions worsen.
For a shopper or a student of the form, the practical takeaway is that several collections, by their designers' own notes, were about how clothes behave in heat and in motion. For the critic, the notable thing is the number of houses that put books, paintings and film into their notes. Valentino brought a library, Akris a painter and Dries Van Noten movie posters. Fashion in Paris this season borrowed freely from the other arts, and it said so out loud.
