Gehry's Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Sets Dec. 11 Opening
Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens Dec. 11, 2026, with 30 galleries and ten cones. The numbers, the long road and why two size figures differ.

A museum designed by Frank Gehry, two decades in the making, now has an opening date. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will welcome the public on Dec. 11, 2026, on Saadiyat Island, the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi announced in July. Gehry, who died on Dec. 5, 2025, at age 96, did not live to see it finished. For New Yorkers, the news is also a Guggenheim story: the building joins the foundation's constellation of museums that includes the Fifth Avenue landmark.
What the building is
According to the announcement, the museum has 30 galleries connected by a central atrium and ten sculptural cones. Nine are clad in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass. The cones reach up to 88 meters and provide natural ventilation and shade. The release gives 11,600 square meters of interior gallery space and 23,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition areas, in a total built-up area of 80,000 square meters.
Dezeen, which covered the announcement on July 28, says the museum is 42,000 square meters, would overtake Gehry's Guggenheim Bilbao in size and will be the largest of the four Guggenheim outposts. The two figures use different measures, and neither source explains the gap, so we report both.
A long road
Plans for the museum were first revealed in 2006, per Dezeen, and construction began in 2011 before works were suspended for several years and restarted in 2019. In 2021 the museum was scheduled for completion in 2025, and Gehry called it truly thrilling. He said he hoped the building would be embraced by the people of the UAE and endure as a landmark for many years.
The museum's collection has been in the making since 2009, the press release says, and it will focus on art from the 1960s to the present. The organizers name pathways through the galleries such as Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling, and say details of the collection and commissions will follow in coming months. Dr. Mariët Westermann, director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, said the collection is uniquely local and global.
Gehry's last chapters
Dezeen notes that Gehry also designed Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi, a performing arts venue revealed recently, and lists Walt Disney Concert Hall and Luna Arles among his landmark buildings. Reuters reported his death on Dec. 5, 2025, citing the New York Times. The Abu Dhabi release calls him the late Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate.
The New York angle
The Guggenheim in Abu Dhabi will be operated by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation together with Abu Dhabi's culture department, and the foundation is based in New York. The release describes the new museum as part of a constellation with New York, Venice and Bilbao. The district around it already holds the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened in 2017, and the Zayed National Museum by Foster and Partners, which opened in December 2025, per Dezeen.
Gehry also built in New York, including a residential tower in Lower Manhattan, but that detail comes from our background knowledge and not from this week's sources.
Where it fits in the Gulf
Saadiyat Island is being built as a cultural district, and the release lists its neighbors: the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. The organizers call it one of the most significant concentrations of cultural institutions in the world. The Guggenheim's stated aim is to present art from many regions rather than a single story, with multilingual programming and displays arranged by relationships between works instead of a straight timeline. Whether visitors experience it that way is an open question until the doors open.
What to watch before December
Three things remain open. The first is the opening program, since the foundation says more will be announced about the collection and commissions. The second is how critics respond to the building two decades after the first plans were revealed. The third is the debate over how to measure size, which will probably settle once the museum publishes its own figures.
What we could not confirm
We did not visit the site, and our figures come from the announcement and Dezeen. We could not reconcile the 80,000 and 42,000 square meter numbers. Ticket prices, hours and the opening exhibition list were not available. The Reuters item is cited from a search summary, and we did not read the full report. The cover photograph shows Gehry at a 2010 reception in Toronto and is not connected to the Abu Dhabi project.
